Vocabulary Bookmark
This year students are in charge of expanding their own vocabularies. They do this by collecting 25 cent words, which are words that require students to either look up definitions in a dictionary or use context clues to understand their meanings. Each week students write their collected words and where the words were found on vocabulary bookmarks. Words are collected throughout the week, and bookmarks are taken up at the beginning of class on Fridays. If students have ten 25 cent words and ten sources, they will receive full credit for the assignment.
Students can find vocabulary words anywhere. Most days a Vocabulary Word of the Day is displayed on the Sacred Writing Time PowerPoint slide. Students can add these words to their bookmarks along with any other 25 cent words they may read or hear in any of their classes. Some students have included 25 cent words from TV shows, AR books, commercials, posters, or conversations with family and friends. The purpose behind having students collect their own vocabulary words is to ensure they can understand and use words they see and hear on a daily basis.
Every few weeks, students will complete a Meaningful Vocabulary Activity using four words from previous bookmark. These include fun and interesting activities such as turning the vocabulary word into a person (personified vocabulary) and using them in poetry (haiku vocabulary). Each activity includes writing as well as an artistic component.
