Exploring a Metaphor
Due: Wednesday, January 21, 2015.
January's monthly project is titled Exploring a Metaphor. For this assignment, students are asked to choose one abstract noun (such as love, hope, fear, etc) and write four metaphors that compare that abstract noun to a concrete noun. The project is divided into four parts (Selecting Nouns, Writing Metaphors, Rough Draft and Editing, and the Final Copy). Directions for each of these parts as well as an example of a finished project can be found on the attached activity sheet:

To reinforce student's understanding of metaphors, students will also spend a few minutes each day of the month of January listening to a song and identifying metaphors that are found in it. Students are encouraged to identify metaphors in their own favorite songs and share them with the teacher. If the songs are appropriate, the teacher will share them with the class! Students will record each day's song, artist, and metaphor on the Metaphors in Music sheet (attached), and submit it at the end of the month.
